The EU engages Lebanese youth in Human Rights and Democracy

On April 9, the Delegation of the European Union and the American University of Beirut organized a panel debate on the topic of "Political Participation, Peace and Reconciliation". Students engaged in discussions with Ambassadors of EU Member States, Members of Parliament, professors and civil society organizations.

The first panel discussed how to deal with the past and to pave the way for the reconciliation of divided communities so that a peaceful, inclusive and tolerant society based on dialogue can prevail. The second panel addressed how women and young people can be more involved in politics and how to create more transparency and accountability in politics. On this occasion, the Head of the Delegation of the European Union to Lebanon, Ambassador Angelina Eichhorst, highlighted that "Human Rights are one of the EU's top priorities".

The event was part of a 'Spring Series' of university debates that the Delegation of the European Union is organizing in April. The topics of the debates have been chosen on the basis of the awarding of the Nobel Peace Prize to the European Union in 2012 and to put focus on the upcoming parliamentary elections in Lebanon. Next university debates will take place as follows:
- 15 April, 14h00-16h00 at the University of Balamand
- 18 April, 11h00-13h00 at the American University of Science & Technology
- 19 April, 14h00-16h00 at Université Saint Joseph
